Specifically, for computer documentation, a process perspective is a bridge to helping student writers conceive the problem of media, or how to address clarity, meaningfulness, order, and accessibility across differing media, e.g. on the page and on the screen. Note on process: It's interesting to follow a ripple of ambivalence when reading. I reacted ambivalendy to Mayer's essay when I first read it; I liked its rough guesses for writing while disliking their rationale. Tracing my dislike to theoretical underpinnings of Mayer's project led me to recall Brandt's theory as an alternative. There, in a different conceptual universe, I rediscovered roots leading to Mayer's best stuff, his suggestions on text design. Odd how contrarily learning from text works. References Brandt, D.
