Report : NEC C PROPOSAL - A NATIONAL EDUCATIONAL COMPUTER CONSORTIU M Alfred Bor k Physics Departmen t University of California Irvine, California 9271 7 The last three chairs of SIGCUE have all been very interested in fostering cooperatio n between the various groups concerned with the computer in learning . A number of suc h groups are active at the present time, with slightly different interests but wit h considerable level of overlap . ADCIS and AEDS have roughly similar size membership t o SIGCUE . Furthermore, other organizations, such as the Conference on Computers in th e Undergraduate Curriculum, sponsor meetings on related topics . In addition to area s of overlap, each organization does have its own distinctive characteristics . The existence of all these separate groups has also meant that the voice of thos e interested in the computerin education tends to be relatively weak in Washington . Man y of us have long felt that a joint organization could have useful effects . At the recent AEDS session in Atlanta, a fortuitous meeting brought a grou p together from the various organizations . These included Karen Duncan, Chairman o f ADCIS ; Brad Bussis, the new president of AEDS ; Dave Kniefel, Chairman of SIGCUE ; an d several others . The . group felt that this is the time when we can move toward join t activities of the major organizations . We are proposing the development of a National Educational Computer Consortium- NECC-- which would have representatives of each of the member groups . Typically thes e representatives would be high officials in the group but different groups might elec t its members in different ways . This consortium would investigate the possibilities of joint activities, includin g a possible combined national meeting no earlier than the fall of 1979 . It is expecte d these organizations would continue to hold their own individual meetings at least fo r the immediate future . The consortium would also be charged with keeping an eye o n events in government and industry which would affect all of us . It was thought tha t it might be possible to get financial support for the early work associated with suc h an organization . These ideas were brought to the AEDS board at the end of the AEDS meeting and wer e approved by that board . It is our intent to bring them to the other organizations i n a variety of ways, and therefore seek support for the formation of the Nationa l Educational Computer Consortium .
