By an on-line quiz I mean a quiz or exercise taken by a studen t sitting directly at either a computer terminal or an individua l (personal) computer system . The student is not marking an answe r sheet, but is typing directly at the display or replying in othe r ways to be discussed . The student may be receiving immediat e feedback from the computer on the responses, and may receive summar y information at the end of the material . Information on student performance, including results of exams, are usually recorded into a computer database for later use by the instructor for grading , statistics, or for improving the examinations . The strategies for authoring such materials are similar to th e strategies for authoring computer dialogs generally . The student i s holding a "conversation" with the writers of the program through th e computer . The procedure outlined follows the tactics develope d
