: uJ and Easy ass Graphics: the Answer? --A review by F.H.D. van Batenburg Institute for Theoretical Biology The Netherlands N MARCH Z994, Quote Quad published my paper entitled "Powerful and Easy Graphics: A Cry for Help." In that paper I stated that APL needs a universal package for powerful "business" graphics. Such a package should be similar over different computers and over various APL vendors and it should offer powerful graphics that are easily activated. My view is that APL desperately needs such a powerful and easy-to-use graphical package--just as Mathematica has the same graphics and the same way to invoke them, whether one works on a Macintosh or on a Sun workstation or on a PC. I am convinced that one reason (though not the only one) for the popularity of packages like Mathematica is because of their powerful graphics. APL needs such tools to keep up in the competition with those packages. Because these competitive offerings exist, I see many scientists around me turn to Maple, MathCad, Mathematica or MatLab. Contrary to what one expects, this is often not for the ability of those packages to do symbolic manipulations; my colleagues told me that they
