Potential Benefits of Corrected-Errors in AVBL Antonios Saravanos Columbia University 1230 Amsterdam Avenue New York, NY 10027 as2374@columbia.edu ABSTRACT This paper proposes the examination of the potential role that corrected-errors can play in asynchronous online video-based learning of troubleshooting education within the context of computer programming language pedagogy. Following Marcone’s ideas several studies were conducted to evaluate the potential benefits of error training in education. In 1991 Frese et al. [2] found that free recall on the material learned by students during error training was superior to error avoidant training. Additionally in 2002 Gully et al. [3] found that as the task became more difficult the students that received the error training performed better than those that did not. The overall idea being that errors expand students’ mental models making them richer than they would be had they only been exposed to errorless training [4]. Categories and Subject Descriptors K.3.1 [Computer Uses in Education]: Distance learning; K.3.2 [Computer and Information Science Education]: Computer science education General Terms Design, Human Factors, Languages, Theory 3. HYPOTHESIS FOR FUTURE STUDY From the aforementioned literature we can hypothesize that the inclusion of corrected-errors in the teaching of troubleshooting of computer programming through AVBL teaching would afford students a more wholesome experience. Developers of instruction can locate points in their teaching that have traditionally provided their students with difficulty and reinforce those points by embedding corrected-errors. It is therefore believed that further experimental study exposing students to instruction with and without corrected-errors is merited and should yield a clearer understanding of the benefits of such pedagogical strategy. Keywords Asynchronous Video-Based Instruction, Learning from Errors 1. INTRODUCTION This paper reviews literature in an attempt to reveal the potential value that student exposure to instructor corrected-errors in asynchronous video-based learning (AVBL) can bring to online computer-mediated learning of troubleshooting. Corrected-errors are defined as snippets within lessons where the instructor covers information on difficult areas of the subject matter by demonstrating possible common errors and explaining the process by which they can be detected and corrected. 4.
