ACM C o n f e r e n c e on the History of Medical informatics Dear Colleague: As you may know, SIGBIO is sponsoring the ACM Conference on the H i s t o r y of Medical I n f o r m a t i c s . This conference is the t h i r d in an ongoing series of conferences on the h i s t o r y of computer science and a p p l i c a t i o n . Because the conference w i l l be held at the National L i b r a r y of Medicine, the number of attendees must be l i m i t e d to 150 r e g i s t r a n t s . The purpose of t h i s l e t t e r is to e x p l a i n the background of the conference and o f f e r SIGBIO members an o p p o r t u n i t y f o r e a r l y r e g i s t r a t i o n . F i r s t , the f i e l d is Robert L. Chartrand, PhD young enough so that most of the pioneers are in good health Library of Congress and can share t h e i r i n s i g h t s . Second, perhaps more than any Morris Collen, MD other a p p l i c a t i o n area, medical i n f o r m a t i c s has made great Kaiser-Permanente Medical Group c o n t r i b u t i o n s to computer science; we b e l i e v e that there are lessons to be learned from t h i s i n t e r a c t i o n between theory and Karen Duncan, PhD Health Information Systems application. F i n a l l y , a review of our c u r r e n t perceptions in the context of the e a r l y goals of medical i n f o r m a t i c s w i l l Thelma Estrin, PhD UoiversitvofCalifornia, LosAngeles provide insight into how our objectives are changing with the computer technology.
