SIGBIO Newsletter page 18 their own workstation. When work on a patient is done. a summary of work done on that patient, embodied in updates to the patient's permanent medical record, would be transmitted via the LAN to the file server where the hospital wide patient database would be updated. Summary The advantage of this scheme is two-fold: the individual departments are able to choose the best hardware and software needed to accomplish their own tasks without making any compromises (see Tolchin et al. 1981). and there is still an amount of centralized support, overseeing that all the departments throughout the hospital can share common medical records with a hospital wide LAN and the file server. This is a synergistic solution to the problem of which MIS implementation is best. A mainframe file server, with its fast data retrieval times and vast storage capacities is used to hold the hospital wide patient database. and this file server is networked to a plethora of low cost. easy to use. reliable workstations that are powerful enough to do all departmental data processing independently of the mainframe.
