SIGCUE OUTLOOK Vol. 26 #2 April 1998 PARTENAIRE: A Cooperative Learning Environment Based on Lotus Notes to Support Distance Learning Marie-Mich~le Boulet INTRODUCTION Computer science is at a crossroads. Stevenson (1994) mentions that the science and engineering components of the High Performance Computing and Communications Act (Federal Coordinating, 1993) require an interdisciplinary approach. That means computer professionals must be able to embrace this collaborative effort among many disciplines. Computer professionals have to learn new attitudes. Among them, computer professionals need to learn to share ideas and opinions; in the mean time, they must learn to criticize ideas without criticizing people. As a computer system is developed for and with clients and users, computer professionals have also to learn to ask clarification and help while in the mean time, they have to learn to give justification on conclusions. To favor the learning of these attitudes, the professor Boulet added a cooperative learning-working environment based on Lotus NOtes and thirteen television programmes (documentaries) to the Information Technology undergraduate course. The goal of the television distance education course is to give an understanding of how important information technology is for a business that needs to stay competitive on a worldwide scale.
