- --- Trip Report ............... Multimodal and Multimedia Interfaces An INTERCHI '93 Workshop, April 24-26 1993, Amsterdam K.-P. Ffihnrich and K.-H. Hanne INTERCHI '93 hosted the workshop on multimodal and multimedia human computer interfaces which was co-initiated and co-sponsored by IFIP TC 13: "Human Compute r Interaction". The workshop had as an essential goal to generate a framework for multimodal and multimedia HCI, to assess existing applications and to discuss possibilities and priorities for future developments. The scope of the workshop was therefore defined to be rather broad, including advanced systems & techniques like notepad computing, virtual reality systems and 3-D graphical user interfaces. This approach was selected because advanced multimodal and multimedia techniques including animation, videosequences, gestural interaction systems or speech / natural language understanding systems have become - from a technical point of view - an attractive choice for human computer interaction. The objectives of the workshop can be listed as follows: ¢ to define the basic concepts of MM&MM HCI; ¢ to explore the existing techniques in order to find paradigms useful for and applicable to the next generation of human interfaces to computers; ¢ to discuss the pro's and con's of different media and
