MULTIMEDIA INTERACTION WITH IMAGE DATABAS E SYSTEM S TOSHIKAZU KAT O TAKIO KURITA HIROYUKI SHIMOGAK I Multimedia Interactio n A picture is worth a thousand words . Image s are good media to communicate with an imag e database system . Multimedia interaction enables users to give multimedia information t o the system as well as to receive it from th e system[l, 2] . Visual interface must be able to interpret several kinds of multimedia informatio n related with computer and human vision . For example, the system should recognize the word s on subjective impression as well as the sketche s we draw as the keys for retrieval . We have developed a prototype visual inter face on our image database systems to suppor t a user-friendly multimedia interaction [3] . Th e systems interpret the given multimedia information to evaluate users' intention . We have implemented the following features ; ¢ A visual query may include image data t o describe the content of the target data . ¢ A learning mechanism adapts its estimatio n criteria for each user . ¢ The multimedia join and selection operations are defined on multiple domains of different
