Modular Visualization Environments: Past, Present, and Future Gordon Cameron Guest Editor Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre Quadstone Ltd. (Nowwith $OFTINIAGE, Montreal) The field of visualization is fast maturing, as more and more people from an increasing number of (mainly scientific) disciplines are gaining insight into their large and complex datasets through visual means. This increase in visualization's popularity can be attributed to a range of packages which are targeted more at the end user than necessarily at the graphics programmer (although certainly nor ignoring the latter class). The so called 'Modular Visualization Environment,' or MVEs, are a class of such application which this issue investigates. Such systems have been around for some time now, with two of the earliest available examples being apE and the intial version of AVS, both described in early magazine articles [I,2]. I thought it would be timely to have another look at the field, and see how things have changed, and what the future holds. Hence a special interest group meeting on the subject at SIGGRAPH 94, which led co the Focus in this issue of "Computer Graphics" on MVEs: Past, Present and Future.
