REPORT Math 199 Computer Calculus a Report Axel T . Schreine r University of Illinoi s Department of Mathematic s 1. Introduction In the summer of 1971 I designed a course in computer applications fo r calculus . Three constraints influenced the design : a) experiences with th e CRICISAM text (1) had not been favourable, students who used it in a firs t semester of calculus were forced to continue with the text during the secon d semester, and this imposed serious scheduling problems, b) our time-sharin g facilities then were extremely limited, if not to say experimental, an d c) time available for course development was rather short - 8 weeks to b e precise . Now the course extends over two semesters, attracts about 10 0 students per semester, and 7 instructors besides myself are teaching it . A third semester is under development . This report discusses some of th e experiences made with the design and operation of a "COMPUTER CALCULUS " course . 2. The Environmen t The choices of software and hardware influence each other ; they als o largely determine the teaching style . First, the question of "batch" o
