M A S K I N G TO DISCOVER ERRORS IN VERB FORMS. Robert Phillips Dept. of S p a n i s h & P o r t u g u e s e Miami University Oxford, O H 45056 Foreign language CAI programs usually begin with fairly simple drills on vocabulary and verb forms, where there is one correct answer. More helpful to the student are diagnostics w h i c h can help the student see the process at work, not merely the correct answer. Yet, CAI authors cannot anticipate all of the possible errors in advance. The technique of "masking" allows us to "block out" parts of a student a n s w e r to discover the error that the student has made. When we do get a "match" in the comparing process, w e k n o w that the error w a s in the blocked out part. In effect, w e m a s k parts of the a n s w e r and instruct the p r o g r a m to ignore those parts. The purpose of these notes is to s h o w h
