Introduction 1.1 Background We will present a system we developed for networked access to multimedia resources. This research area h a s n ' t received the attention it deserves from the m u l t i m e d i a c o m m u n i t y (Adie, 1993). It is influenced by many other fields in computer science. The most important are research on information retrieval and on databases, particularly so-called next-generation databases (Cattell, 1991).
