Making the AnnualCHI ConferenceEnvironmentallySound Rory Stuart and Shelly Dews, EnvironmentalCo-Chairs,CHI "94 Most of us are concerned about ensuring that we negatively impact the environment as little as possible. Computers are sometimes seen as a potential force for making the way we work more environmentally sound. However, large conferences such as the annual C H I conference can put a strain on the environment by using resources, generating waste, and exposing people to environmental hazards both in the short-term (e.g. cigarette smoke-filled air) and in the long-term (e.g. aquifers eventually contaminated by chemicals generated in production or breakdown of materials used). To address such concerns, Wendy Kellogg, a CHI '94 Conference CoChair, suggested creating a position on the program committee to address ways in which the CHI conference could be made more environmentally sound (certainly many of the conference committee members were concerned with environmental issues long before the 1994 conference). Rory Stuart quicldy recruited Shelly Dews (a local) and set about defining the role of the environmental chair, deciding what was feasible to do for CHI '94, and implementing the ideas. This brief report will focus on our experience and the feedback we received from attendees. By making
