Data Processing began the uphill battle to professional status with the advent of the Data Processing Management Association's Certificate in Data Processing (CDP) in 1962. The success of this effort is still in question. Arnold Keller, Editor of Infosystems , referred to the CDP as "an inside joke" in a February 1975 editorial. The CDP, however, has played a very useful role in offering a competence exam for those in the profession without a college degree.
