Report : Learning Mathematics Through LOG O LEARNING MATHEMATICS THROUGH LOG O by Jim How e Tim O'She a Department of Artificial Intelligenc e University of Edinburg h Forrest Hil l Edinburgh EH1 2Q L Scotland Background Research work in Artificial Intelligence suggests that building compute r programs is a particularly good way of understanding a complex process suc h as understanding natural language or interpreting visual scenes (see, fo r example, Boden, 1977), since in effect one has to teach the machine how t o do it . Influenced by this view, we decided to try to find out if children' s understanding of classroom mathematics can be improved if they teach th e computer to solve mathematical problems . For this work, we use our own dialect of a simple but powerful interactive programming language, calle d LOGO . Superficially, it might seem that we are merely advocating tha t children should be taught computer programming - but this is already don e in schools in the U .K ., so what is new about the project? The answer t o this question should become clear when we see how the language is used . Let
