Lab Report Special Section: The University of Massachusetts Center for Intelligent Information Retrieval W. Bruce Croft, Director Computer Science Department University of Massachusetts Amherst, MA 01003-4610 Overview The Center for Intelligent Information Retrieval in the Computer Science Department is an NSFsponsored center that is supported by the State of Massachusetts, the Federal government, and industrial members. More than 50 students, professionals, and faculty are involved in a broad range of basic research and technology transfer programs. The faculty involved are Jamie Callan, Wendy Lehnert, Victor Lesser, Kathryn McKinley, Elliot Moss, and Edwina Rissland. The most significant accomplishments we have made to date are the numerous research advances we have made and the success we have had in rapidly moving this research into software that is distributed to our members. The research advances, which have been reported in 80 papers since the start of the Center, cover a wide range of areas, including text representation, retrieval strategies, distributed retrieval, query processing, routing, integration with database systems, information extraction, automated knowledge acquisition, and case-based reasoning. A bibliography of these papers can be found in the Center's web h o m e page (http://ciir.cs.umass.edu/). Some of the most significant results have
