The problem is especially acute in circuits and systems with mixed-signal functionality. A significant problem area exists in the capturing of information, where the carrier of such information is called a hardware description language (HDL). We need to develop HDL theory and techniques, which support the entire product development cycle. This cycle includes specification, synthesis, test, formal verification, and manufacturing data support, as well as the traditional modeling and simulation arenas. We should also consider coupling HDL developments to computer-aided engineering and computer-aided design tools and backplanes."
