Seminar: Introduction to the Marine Biology Case Study Alyce Brady Math and Comp. Science Kalamazoo College Kalamazoo, MI 49006 abrady@kzoo.edu Abstract A new case study for the AP curriculum, based on a marine biology simulation program will be released for the 20002001 academic year. The case study highlights linear and two-dimensional data structures, object interaction, objectoriented design, and discrete simulation. This seminar will introduce the new case study to AP teachers and other interested CS educators, and will discuss how it can be integrated into the AP (or CS 1 and CS 2) curricula. Michael J. Clancy Comp. Science Division Univ. of California Berkeley, CA 94720 clancy@cs.berkeley.edu Subtleties Kathleen Larson Kingston High School Kingston, NY klarson@ulster.net ¢ gotchas, subtleties, and advanced concepts that would be helpful for teachers to know when preparing to use the case study in the classroom Presenters Alyce Brady is Assistant Professor and Director of the Computer Science Program at Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Her research interests include object-oriented programming languages and design techniques. She has given workshops on integrating objectoriented design into the first year curriculum to high school and college instructors at College Board workshops and at SIGCSE 1999. She has been a member of the AP CS Development Committee since 1997, was involved in the design and review of the case study program and narrative, and is using it in CS 1 and CS 2 courses this year. Michael Clancy is Senior Lecturer and coordinator of lower-division courses at University of California, Berkeley. He has been a proponent of the case study method for CS education for many years and, supported by NSF, has engaged in research to evaluate and extend the case study approach. Clancy has given many talks on the subject to audiences of high school and college instructors, most recently workshops at SIGCSE 1998 and SIGCSE 1999. He is a co-author (with Marcia Linn) of the Designing Pascal Solutions collections of case studies published by W.H. Freeman, and is the author of the new Marine Biology Case Study. Kathleen Larson has been teaching AP Computer Science at Kingston High School, Kingston, New York, since 1984. Beginning in 1989 she served as a faculty consultant at the AP CS Reading and is currently a Question Leader. She has been a member of the AP CS Development Committee since 1997, contributed a syllabus to the current Teacher's Guide published by the College Board, and presents workshops for high school teachers. She was also involved in the design and review of the case study, and is using it in her AP courses this year. Topics The seminar will include presentations by the three seminar leaders and opportunities for attendees to discuss teaching ideas, model classroom activities, and create a community of learners and teachers as we prepare to integrate the new case study into our courses. Specific topics will include: Background information ¢ the scenario behind the marine biology case study ¢ highlights of the case study ¢ the structure of the program ¢ the structure of the narrative How to integrate the case study into your course ¢ as an illustratation of basic concepts ¢ as a vehicle to introduce/explore specific concepts such as object interaction, class interfaces, using random numbers, vectors and matrices, test plans and testing, and sorting algorithms ¢ as a recurring exercise or project throughout the year ¢ as a supplement to your textbook, providing coverage of objects early, the AP classes (apstring, apvector, apmatrix), appropriate use of the const keyword, and selection sort, among other topics ¢ sample syllabi
