Book Commentary 32 I n t r o d u c t i o n to C o m m e n t a r i e s on Minimalism Beyond the Nurnberg Funnel Robert R. Johnson Department of English Miami University Oxford, OH 45056 johnsorr@muohio.edu can think of few concepts in technical communication that have been as widely discussed, yet as widely misunderstood, as "minimalism."The reason for the great interest in minimalismis pretty easy to understand. Computer documents have been openly chastised for being too long, too dense, or just plain too unusable. The "minimalist enterprise" has been, from its very beginning, an attempt to change all that. Nevertheless, minimalist approaches to designing and producing computer documents have been less than pervasive. Minimalisra Beyond the NurnbergFunnel is John Carroll's attempt to spread the word of minimalism to a wider audience-most particularly the burgeoning audience of computer documentation writers who would benefit from the nearly two decades of research dedicated to minimalism. The idea for the collection was spawned through conversations Carroll had with members of SIGDOC at the 1993 conference in Banff, and then it was supported through a Society for Technical Communication research grant in 1995.
