Information Retrieval Activity in Pre University Education in the United Kingdom Steven Pollit t National Library of Medicine , Bethesda, Maryland, an d Huddersfield Polytechnic, U K Introduction Initial thoughts after accepting the invitation to write this paper were that I woul d investigate and compile a review of information retrieval (IR) activity in pre university education . Second thoughts were to put together a report on identifie d activities which, while lacking the authority of a review, would provide the reade r with a historical context and a taste of the type and flavour of current activity, wit h a brief look into the future . The second thoughts came about after disappointing literature searches of two of th e major commercial online bibliographic databases and through suffering the constraint s of a publication deadline . Based on the absence of relevant articles in the results o f the literature searches, the alternatives regarding IR in pre university education i n the U .K . are that there is : 1 . very little activity 2 . a great deal of activity which is not well documente d 3 . a great deal of well documented
