The "failure" o f his m a n a g e m e n t and development efforts to write a functional, reusable, general-purpose operating system for IBM taught h i m m a n y useful lessons, and he wanted to share them with the community. Apparently, very few were listening. Thus it happened that m a n y other industrial software efforts were plagued b y the very same mistakes, and even who listened (like the W i n d o w s N T 3 . 0 development team) m a d e n e w ones. In recent times, the term "technology transfer" has acquired more and more importance. The academic c o m m u n i t y is getting increasingly involved with Industry, as industrial software development becomes more and more difficult, requiring a huge amount o f resources, and
