IN MEMORIAM EUGENE L . LAWLE R Eugene L . Lawler died on September 2, 1994, aged 61 . after an eight-month battle wit h cancer . He is survived by his wife Marijke, son Stephen, and daughter, son-in-law an d granddaughter, Susan, Matthew and Janna Rose Surprise . He will also be dearly missed b y his students, colleagues, and friends . Gene obtained an A .M . at Harvard University in 1957 . was a Senior Electrical Enginee r at Sylvania Electric Products in Needham . Massachusetts, from 1959 until 1961 . and wen t back to Harvard to obtain a Ph .D . in 1962 . He taught at the University of Michigan i n Ann Arbor from 1962 until 1970 and at the University of California at Berkeley since 1971 . He combined an illustrious career of highly influential research with a history of dedicate d service to both universities . Throughout his career, Gene was an active member of th e theoretical computer science community : he served on the editorial board of SL4 11 J. on Applied Mathematics (1968â1972) as well as 31411 J. on Computing (1972-1980) .
