TRIP REPORTS (continued) ICCAD-93 Trip Report Tong Gao Department of Computer Science University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Urbana, Illinois 61801 The international conference on computer-aided design was held at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, California, from November the 7th to November the 14th. 420 papers were reviewed, and more than 100 papers were presented. Presentations were held in 4 parallel sessions from November the 8th to November the 10th. Three panel discussions were also held from November the 8th to November the 10th. The conference was well organized and was full of events. It was a great experience for me to participate in the conference. During the conference, I attended many interesting talks and panel discussions. Since my research area is in performance driven placement and routing, I attended most talks in physical design area. I found that these talks to be of great help to my research. In particular, I found that the paper "A Spacing Algorithm for Performance Enhancement and Cross-Talk Reduction" written by K. Chaudhary, A. Onozawa, and E. S. Kuh to be closely related to my research and very interesting. The panal discussion "How Much Better is Better Enough" discussed the pros and cons of using benchmarks in the computer aided design area. The discussion also pointed out many important concerns about benchmark circuits in the CAD community. On November the 10th, I presented our paper " Minimum Crosstalk Channel Routing". Our paper proposed a new approach to the channel routing problem with crosstalk constraints which utilizes existing channel routing algorithms and improves upon the routing results by permuting the routing tracks. A novel mixed integer linear programming formulation and effective procedures for reducing the number of variables and constraints in the mixed integer linear programming formulation were also presented in our paper. The experimental results of using our approach were very promising. I am also very pleased to meet with so many active researchers in my field, both from industry and academia. Since I am graduating next year, this conference also offered me a great chance to explore my future employment opportunities. Again I appreciate the opportunity to attend ICCAD93.
