Toolsfor Workingwith Guidelines HyperSAM A Management Tool for Large User Interface Guideline Sets Renato lannella The Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community has always preached the importance of following guidelines for designing user interfaces. Unfortunately, the wide range of guidelines available are not always easily accessible or applicable. An attempt to readdress this situation has been made by a few in the provision of tools to manage user interface guidelines.. User interface guidelines require a number of steps to be followed in the application of the recommendations (Potosnak, 1988): 1 Select guidelines that apply to the system being designed (not all would be relevant). 2 Determine the ranking and importance of guidelines. 3 Translate each guideline into rules that can be directly applied (by programmers). 4 Plan for any exceptions to any guideline. 5 Evaluate the final design. There are numerous sets of guidelines that cover a wide range of computer environ- ments and interfaces. Almost all need to be subjected to the above checklist. Others, that are specific to particular interface toolkits or areas (eg colours) can be used in a more generalised way. Hence, tools to aid in the above list of requirements can improve the process of
