Historical perspectives of Computing: an introductory lab for browsing on the World Wide Web Deborah L. Knox Department Trenton of Computer Science State College knox@trenton.edu Abstract This paper describes a lab to introduce students to the World Wide Web to conduct research for a classroom presentation on the historical perspectives of computing. The theme is learning to search and browse on the Web. Each team is responsible for a particular era of historical development in computing. We outline the assignment, and conclude with a list of selected URL bookmarks. The students learn about HTML, creating pages and generating links, and how to search, download, and incorporate the material into a presentation. Students enjoy the presentations, and learn about some of the most noteworthy developments in computing. of browsing on the Web. In the process, the students became proficient at using the Web, and not just for the recreational purposes that often dominate their time.
