Guest Editor's Introduction Distributed Computing - A Choice of the Present and the Future! Rajeev Raje Computer and Information Science Department Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis Indianapolis, IN 46202, U. S. A. rraje~cs.iupui.edu/rajeev_raje~acm.org In recent years, the computing paradigm has shifted from the centralized model to the distributed one. In addition to many advantages offered by the distributed computing model, the phenomenal progress in the processor and networking architectures have made it a viable practical alternative to centralized processing. As appealing as it may sound, designing distributed systems is far from simple. Many inherent characteristics (such as heterogeneity, local autonomy, partial failure and latency) increase the complexity of the design process, making the realization of the distributed systems a major challenge. This special issue is dedicated to distributed computing systems. It covers a wide spectrum of topics ranging from the characterization of distributed systems to the design of frameworks and languages. The article by Cormier, Guy and I:tuddock describes quick tests for characterizing distributed systems, a long with simple test cases. Raj's article discusses the active collection framework and illustrates its usefulness in building enterprise applications. The effectiveness of Java, in the domain of scientific computing, is assessed in Villacis' article. Jamison and Lea present the TRUCE language and ACACIA distributed infrastructure for scripting distributed agents. The short article by Mukhopadhyay highlights the importance of the distributed paradigm in the field of control systems. Finally, the article by Raje and Chinnasamy discusses the issues and challenges involved in designing the global-scale information systems. I thank Barrett Bryant for inviting m e to edit this special issue. M y sincere gratitude to all the authors without whose support this issue would not have been a reality. Also, m y special thanks to Douglas Lea, Edward Guy, Joseph Williams and Sivakumar Chinnasamy for their help in the reviewing process. I hope that the readers will find this special issue to be very informative and will provide them with the glimpse of the fascinating field of distributed computing.
