The ANSI/IEEE standard describing Ada as a Program Design Language was approved by the IEEE in 1986 and reaffirmed in 1992. Normal IEEE procedures would require that it next be reconsidered for withdrawal, revision or reaffirmation in 1997. The completion of the Ada 95 language revision, though, suggests that reconsideration of the standard should be accelerated. After a quick overview of IEEE standardization, this article briefly describes the history of the Ada/PDL standard and its contents. It poses some of the issues relevant to reconsideration of the standard. Finally, it solicits volunteers to help determine the future of the standard.
