CONTRIBUTIONS From the Guest Editor Concept Development for Computer Animation Karen Sullivan Ringling School of Art and Design The 3D computer animator is an artist, a technician and a storyteller - - all rolled into one. Animation students should learn to begin with a creative idea, let it evolve into sketches, drawings and storyboards, and use the computer as a tool to bring it to life. The initial questions should be: how do I get a creative idea? What are the elements of a good story? How do I develop a character that is consistent with my concept? What do I want to communicate to an audience? How do I communicate this to an audience? All too often, the focus is initially on technology and technique. In many academic animation programs, the depth of the technology overwhelms creative concept. For many students, the relationships between foundational art studies, concept and research, and their work in the 3D environment are unclear. There is an overriding presumption that if they focus on the software, they will be successful animators. But computer animation is largely n o t about hardware and software. Unquestionably, computer animators must become proficient with technology. They must
