Not the least of these is that the eighteen-essay volume reminds us, implicitly at least, that we are as responsible for critiquing and rethinking workplace practice as we are for reshaping our pedagogy. Edited by Mary Sue Garay and Stephen A. Bernhardt, Expanding Literacies describes a new, and progressive, workplace where all employees participate fully in an organization's life, taking responsibility for forging its goals and benefiting from their realization. It also demonstrates how English language teachers, at different educational levels, have designed assignments which give students practice in producing the kinds of texts found in the workplace. What the collection does not offer is resistance to conventional notions of teachers serving industry uncritically,reviewing and revising their pedagogy without asking for what purpose and for whose benefit.
