EDUCATION FORUM Taking the Pulse : Assessing Student Perception of Learnin g It's that time of the week again . Friday afternoon with a nice weekend just around the corner . Unfortunately, the corner is our 4 :00 theory class . The pumping lemma for context fre e languages seems to be a difficult concept for students to grasp in the best of circumstances , and four o'clock on Friday does not rank very high on the list of good circumstances . What are the students thinking? More precisely, are they thinking? It's a while until the nex t exam, and with the size of this class, frequent quizzes are out of the question . In fact, w e really don't want all of the information that we could garner from a well-written quiz o r exam . All we really want to do is take the pulse of the class, to see if there is still a thread of life there, hope for resuscitation if necessary . Perhaps one could take the pulse this way. At the beginning of class, have four by si x inch note cards passed around the class as the lecture gets underway
