Entertaining the Future Exploring the "Core Incompetence" for Solutions Mike Milne FrameStore In this, the first appearance of a regular column, i'm afraid I've climbed up onto my soapbox to sound off about something I feel strongly about, but that (as far as I know) nobody else does. I had intended to start the column with a worthy piece about the push for higher-level controls in animation systems or a discussion of possible future directions - - (just the sort of thing you would expect of this sort of column) - - but it didn't turn out that way. The more I tried to write, the more I realised that actually my heart wasn't in it - - and that I was thinking about something else. So I decided to write about the something else instead. I should point out that I am offering a highly personal view, and one chat is not necessarily shared by my colleagues, the company I w o r k for, the ACM, or the Editor of this publication!
