SIGCUE OUTLOOK Vol. 26 #3 July 1998 English Stress and Rhythm: A Phonetics Courseware Cecilia Shu-huei Sun INTRODUCTION The computer technology in the recent decade is seen to have numerous authoring programs or systems developed in the United States for use not only in the computerassisted instruction or language learning (CAI/CALL) but also in other fields. According to Holtz (1995), the authoring programs and the companies that manufacture them are Authorware and Director by Macromedia, Iconware by Aimtech, Multimedia Explorer by Autodesk, Multimedia Viewer by Microsoft, and Multimedia ToolBook by Asymetrix. Each of these programs has its own unique features for building multimedia applications that operate on the IBM and compatible machines under the Windows operating environment. Multimedia ToolBook 3.0, a product of 1990-1994 Asymetrix Corporation in Bellevue, Washington, is the multimedia authoring system for Windows that possesses the characteristic features which almost any of the above programs share: (1) combining a variety of media, such as text, sound (audio), video, graphics, image, and animation; (2) having the capabilities of accepting new information, making decisions, holding memory, making immediate correction and feedback, creating new data or dynamic visual displays, and even controlling such media as speech synthesis, speech
