EDUCATION FORUM Bugs in Computer Science Courses ? Every so often someone takes the American education system to task for its failures . One favorite theme is that colleges and universities do not prepare students for the "real " worl d of work, stuffing their minds with material (i . e ., theory) that is practically useless on the job while neglecting the really important skills . Such examinations of the system are certainl y worthy exercises, as they generally do contain a healthy dose of truth that can be considered as periodic modifications are made to the curriculum . On the other hand, simplisti c arguments suggesting that "practical" training be promoted at the expense of theory whil e deceptively appealing on the surface would have serious, negative consequences . Computer Science Education Under Fir e In a recent article, "Colleges Need to Fix the Bugs in Computer-Science Courses " by Nathaniel Borenstein (The Chronicle of Higher Education, July 15, 1992, pp B3 B4) computer science education comes under fire for its focus on theory at the expense of pragmatics .
