Domenico Ferrari Wins 2006 ACM SIGCOMM Award Domenico Ferrari, Director of the Center for Research on the Applications of Telematics to the Organization and Society (CRATOS) at the Università Cattolica, Piacenza, Italy, and Chair of General Informatics in the College of Economics, is the winner of the 2006 ACM SIGCOMM Award. The SIGCOMM Award is widely recognized as the highest honor in computer networking. The Award recognizes lifetime achievement in and contributions to the field. It is awarded annually to a person whose work, over the course of his or her career, represents a significant contribution to the field and a substantial influence on the work and perceptions of others in the field. The SIGCOMM Award is presented to Dr. Ferrari œin recognition of fundamental contributions to Internet QoS architecture and wide-area network research testbeds, his leadership in managing the BSD Unix project, his leadership in founding and establishing ICSI as a premier international networking research institutions, and his dedication to educating the next generation of leaders in networking research. Dr. Ferrari will receive his award at the SIGCOMM annual conference in Pisa, Italy on September 12. Domenico Ferrari was a pioneer in the area of real-time communications and quality of service (QoS) over the Internet. As early as 1987, he anticipated the importance of real-time Internet applications such as voice and video; he further recognized that the Internet architecture would need to change fundamentally to support these applications. In 1989, he created the Tenet group at UC Berkeley, dedicated to fundamental research in the underpinnings of Internet QoS as well as protocol development and experimentation. The Tenet protocol suite provided a comprehensive and elegant set of protocols for achieving real-time guarantees. To test these and other protocols, Prof. Ferrari played a leadership role in the creation and research use of several wide-area testbeds, including XUNET, the backbone of the Blanca Gigabit Testbed, and SequoiaNet, the California experimental IP network. Perhaps less well-known is the critical role Prof. Ferrari played in the success of BSD Unix. He led the computer research systems group at Berkeley which developed BSD Unix. He also negotiated the key licensing agreement that enabled wide dissemination of BSD Unix and university/industry collaboration in its development. Prof. Ferrari was also one of the founders of the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI) in Berkeley. He served as Deputy Director and Vice President, as well as head of ICSI ™s Networks Group. In the hallmark of a consummate teacher, Prof. Ferrari has left a deep and enduring mark on the field via his development of students and post-docs. He has supervised or mentored an incredible group of current leaders in the networking field. Prof. Ferrari is a Fellow of the IEEE, a Fellow of the ACM, and was awarded the 1987 A. A. Michelson Award of the Computer Measurement Group.
