The goalh of the Visual Interaction Design Special Interest Area are to act as a fbcal point ~ r visual interaction design interest within SIGCHL to advance visual interaction design as an integral component of HCI, and to integrate visual interaction design with the rest of SIGCHI. In our field, Design might mean system design, interface design, industrial design, or graphic design. We read books like "Designing the User Interface," "The Art of Human-Computer Interface Design," and "The Design of Everyday Things." We talk about the process of design and some of us think of ourselves as designers. But what do we really mean by Design? What is Design? us to communicate successfully, it's just a matter of whose time it's going to be. Many of us focus our energies on designing communications for receivers who are not necessarily inclined to invest any
