The Turing Test was conceived by Alan Turing 1 as a device to encourage skeptics to seriously consider the question of a computer that might behave intelligently. I have always wondered if Turing intended the pun: a gedanken test for thought. From the perspective of computing at mid-century, it was a daring and imaginative device, but today, if you listen carefully, you might hear Turing's crow-like laugh wherever AI experts gather to defend its contemporary utility.
