Debating : Its Use in Teaching Socia l Aspects of Computin g Lorraine Staeh r Lecturer La Trobe University College of Northern Victori a lorraine@ironbark .ucnv.edu.au Introductio n The following is an account of usin g debating to teach and assess students i n the social aspects of computing . In the past students had been asked t o write a report on a social issue related t o the use of computers . In addition to the written report they were required t o present the issue in a tutorial session . The task was done individually and the y were expected to present a particula r point of view on the topic and the n generate discussion. In the main. the presentation was done poorly as man y students had no idea of how to generate discussion and they did not seem to b e able to successfully take a point of vie w on the chosen topic and argue its case . The idea of debating arose from this , and also the fact that in 1992 there wa s a significant increase in class size . With the decline in employment prospects i n
