CS 1 LABS : GOALS AND EXPECTATION S by David T . Brown Department of Mathematics and Computer Scienc e Ithaca Colleg e Ithaca, NY 14850 Purpose The purpose of this paper is to discuss th e goals and expectations of the students in th e laboratory component of the CS 1 course at Ithac a College . After describing the background for th e course, a brief review of literature is presented . Thi s leads to a mission statement for the laboratory whic h in turn yields three goals . The paper then discusses the nature of the laboratories and the author' s expectations of the students during the semester . An appendix to this paper contains one sampl e laboratories . Introductio n For fall semester, 1989, Ithaca College supported the creation of a compute r classroom/laboratory to be used with the variou s computer courses . The room contains 30 IBM PS/ 2 model 55 SX microcomputers running on a Novel l network . The room is used for literacy course s taught for the general student population as well a s courses for the major , The first course for the major at
