front of the under layer that the planes do not intersect (a push modifier takes each plane and moves it along its local direction, its normal, a set distance). This technique is used because Shockwave does not accommodate layered or composite materials, as does 3D Studio MAX. Some textures can be taken directly from photographs. A photograph of the side of a building that is more or less straight on and in good lighting can be deformed in Photoshop to get a flat image of one or more sides of a building. A more common way of making the texture is to make a model of the building in MAX using all the modeling, texture and lighting tools. This model can have many polygons and any type of texture. I set up an orthographic (no perspective) camera perpendicular to the faces of the building and then render. I take the image, modify it in Photoshop as needed and then apply it to a low polygon model. About the Author Kevin Abt is a 19-year old student with interests in art, music and computer programming. But these technological advancements, and more, are not being utilized where we need them most in the education of the world s children. The only part of the planet s integration into advanced computer technologies that has not yet evolved is the process of education. Imagine if a child didn t just read about historical moments but could live them; ask the local people questions, discuss strategies with key historical figures, passively watch the activities or help change the shape of the future. Imagine if our educators are scriptwriters, artists and engineers developing historical, mathematical, scientific and artistic interactive scenarios. Each country designs the interactive experience of their history. Students from around the world learn about their country s histories as well as other cultures from highly recognized teachers who work together as creationists of a renaissance in education. Imagine a child as passionately involved in learning as when playing a video game. If you can imagine an advanced education system utilizing interactive computer technologies uniting the children of the world, where all children are actively stimulated and involved in learning and growing together, it can be done.
