Education CONSTRUCTING EXAMINATIONS VIA APL Paul n . Randalph Unfortunately, it is difficult to build a large pool of questions, particularly if the questions invotve computation. F o r each question, not only must the correct answers be computed, b u t plausible wrong answers, o r 'detractors' must also be computed. A s a result, the pools, which had a computer software fimitation of twenty four questions, were m o r e fikely to contain only five o r six questions. A s a result, the fraternity files soon h a d every question of every pool. Initially, w e m i d the exams were open-book and open-notes. A f t e r one semester we discovered that the " n o t e s " for m a n y students were nothing m o r e than sheets of p a p e r with all the questions with the correct answer indicated. F u r t h e r m o r e , fraternities were selling these packets for $30.00 p e r exam. Needless to say, we eliminated the open-notes i d e a very quickly. T h e n w
