Concurrent information processing (CIP) neurocomputing systems learn, monitor, and perform automatically, from quickly arriving information. CIP applications include adaptive process control, adaptive health advisory systems, online computer glitch detection, adaptive quality monitoring, and other settings where automatic learning, monitoring, and performing must keep pace with rapidly arriving data. Sequential CIP rates range from .3 milliseconds per 16-feature record to 1 second per 1,000-feature record, and faster parallel CIP rates are possible. CIP operational highlights are given and applications are described in this article. Sequential and parallel computing details and principles will be described in a follow-up article.
