Computing Surveys Symposium on Models of Programming Languages and Computation CHRIS HANKIN Department of Computing, Imperial College, London, U.K. clh@doc.ic.ac.uk HANNE RIIS NIELSON Department of Computer Science, Aarhus University, Aarhus, Denmark This symposium gives a broad overview of models of programming languages and computation. Taking into account that the demands for modern programming languages involve the skillful integration of techniques from different areas, the aim is to describe the state of the art, present the challenging problems, and outline emerging directions. The timeliness of the symposium was realized at the seminar on New Trends in the Integration of Paradigms, held at Dagstuhl Castle in September 1995 and organized by Hanne Riis Nielson and Chris Hankin. To ensure a wider coverage of topics we decided also to approach the participants in the meeting Semantics of Programming Languages, held at the Newton Institute during the summer of 1995, as well as a few other individuals. We received 32 draft submissions and are happy to present 21 of these; together they span the areas of programming language design, program analysis, program verification, and types. The articles on programming language design give an overview of some of the major issues
