In this regard, one of the chief factors contributing to the cost of the health care system pertains to the cost of information handling. Estimates vary, but it is generally believed that this factor alone contributes between 25 percent and 39 percent to the total cost of health care (2). In the future, the role of information is destined to grow. Increased social and governmental nressures for accountability and peer review, new forms of sophisticated instrumentation, and new structures for health care delivery such as multiphasic screening and Health Maintenance Organizations will each serve to enlarge the amount and importance of information management in the health care system. At present, a large hospital may anticipate as many as 4,000 laboratory orders per day; as many as i0,000 physicians orders~ and as many as 70,000 drug and treatment orders.
