Jodi Forlizzi & Laura Franz Collaboration and D e s i g n from a Distance University o f Pennsylvania L a w School Case Study While the Internet can be tapped for collaborative communication and information sharing, there are still some pitfalls in working jointly to create shared knowledge, especially when collaborating and designing from a distance. Recently, we served as consultants to the University o f Pennsylvania L a w School on the redesign o f their website. Designers and client collaborated on the project at a distance. In doing so, we were forced to deal with some previously unexplored issues: how to mediate physical distance during collaboration, collect data from users at a distance, show and discuss work, and h o w to reach consensus at key phases o f the project. The Project The University of Pennsylvania recognized an opportunity to improve the user experience o f its web site. We were hired to conduct a series of informational interviews with users and content providers, to interpret the resulting data, to bring some direction to the purpose and scope o f the site, and to redesign the interaction design and communication design of the
