Olson Cognitive Science and Machine Intelligence Laboratory The University o f Michigan 701 Tappan Street A n n Arbor, Michigan 48109-1234 gmo@csmil.umich.edu The Laboratory The Cognitive Science and Machine Intelligence Laboratory (CSMIL) is an interdisciplinary organization, spanning the fields of artificial intelligence, cognitive science, human-computer interaction, and collaboration technology. Its primary mission is to facilitate faculty research, graduate student training, and undergraduate education, with a special focus on cross-college collaborations. It is sponsored by three colleges at the University of Michigan: the Graduate School of Business Administration, the College of Engineering, and the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA). CSMIL faculty are interested in a variety of specific topics in human or machine cognition, such as vision, attention, memory, learning, language use, reasoning, and problem-solving. Some are also interested in designing and evaluating the interaction between humans and computer systems, in developing computer tools to augment and extend human cognition, and to design and evaluate technology to support collaborations. CSMIL faculty have a broad range of experience in methods relevant to these problems, including such areas as the design of
