Calculator Functions On Bitmapped Computer s .Jeff .Johnso n Xerox Office Systems Divisio n 2100 Geng Roa d Palo Alto, CA 9430 3 A hstrac t Marty of the calculator functions that run fi n hittmapped workstations and personal computer s are designed to simulate real hand-hel d calculators . Such a design allows rapid transfe r of skill to an otherwise unfamiliar- .situation . However, such. a design is naive, in tha t simulated calculators inherit all of the problems of real calculators and fail to exploit th e opportunities for improvement that a graphic s workstation provides . calculated results are to be entered, and vice versa . This restriction has been lifted recently with th e appearance of workstations, personal computers , and software systems that allow users t o interact with several programs at once (t o varying degrees of "at once") through the use o f split screens or "windows" . System designer s and implementors, noting the restriction' s passing, have begun to implement calculato r programs for the new systems . A calculato r function may soon be regarded as a standard an d indispensible feature of a personal computer .
