REPORT CAI SUPPORTS INDIVIDUALIZED LEARNING PROGRAMS IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY (MARYLAND) PUBLIC SCHOOLS Catherine E. Morgan, Director Computer-Assisted Instruction Program Montgomery County (Maryland) Public Schools ~J Montgomery County, Maryland, is a suburb of the nation's capital. The county extends north and west of Washington, D.C., and covers an area of 494 square miles. About 70 per cent of the county's population of approximately 500,000 is concentrated in the southern third of its area, that is, in the portion of Maryland contiguous to Washington, where great numbers of the county's residents work. The county's population diminishes in density with distance from the central city and becomes rural in its northern reaches. The county school system is the 19th largest in the nation, presently enrolling 125,000 students in 200 schools with elementary and secondary schools located in all areas. The Montgomery County Computer-Assisted Instruction Program, Project REFLECT was funded in June, 1968, for a three-year period under Title III of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965.
