The book addresses the important problem of adaptation of an embedded system's behaviour to make it more appropriate to the environment in which it is embedded. This process, in its broadest sense, is referred to as learning, and for the author this also includes such simple forms of learning as measuring the width of a hall to allow a measuring robot to perform better. The philosophical debate about what does and does not constitute machine learning is left alone; the interested reader is referred to an earlier publication by the same author.
